Comment from Colombia

Postby Steve Nomchong » Sat Mar 24, 2007 3:14 am

The following comes from Cesar Diaz, an IRF certified Instructor from Colombia. For those that don't read Spanish, 1) he supports the inclusion of a Class 2 certification to incentivise the training of guides, within the IRF Award Scheme, many of whom raft on class 2 rivers without adequate training; 2) that the minumum practical experience for certification at this level should be 15 descents; 3) he is lobbying the government in Colombia to base training and certification of guides on the IRF Award Scheme.

River miles

Postby Steve Nomchong » Tue Mar 27, 2007 10:20 pm

This comment comes from Bill Dvorak of Dvorak Expeditions in Colorado, USA:

One initial comment is that very little training competency verification in this part of the world is done with hours on the river. After the initial 50 hours of beginner guide training everything else is done on river miles i.e.:

50 hours plus CPR and First aid to be trained class 2-3 guide

500 commercial river miles to be a trip leader or run a single boat trip on class 2-3

750 miles and 2 orientation runs plus one certification run with a guide trainer to run easier class 4 like the Royal Gorge on the Arkansas

1,000 miles and 2 orientation runs plus one certification run with a guide trainer to run more technical class 4 like the Numbers on the Arkansas

1,500 miles and 2 orientation runs plus one certification run with a guide trainer to run class 5 like Pine Creek on the Ark or Gore Canyon on the Colo. And be a guide trainer

So I would suggest you calculate some way to equivocate hours to miles or accept both. One of the reasons we use miles here is because of longer multi-day trips where you might be gone for 6-7 days and only do 80-90 miles on the river.
